Adding flowerboxes add beauty to your home and creates a welcoming atmosphere. Making and designing your own flower boxes add a personal touch and provides a cheerful look to your home. Additionally, they add a touch of nature to your living area whether you live in a city apartment or in a country farmhouse.
Window boxes or flower boxes are made from several materials like wood, plastic, ceramics, terra cotta, fibreglass and stone. It is a good idea to choose those from insect resistant materials. Choose flower boxes that offer adequate space for the plant to grow. Use boxes that are at least eight inches in width and 8 inches deep to work well in planting various flowers. Here are some tips on adding flowerboxes to your home. Materials you can use include hand saw, ½-inch plywood, yardstick pencil, wood glue, and 1 inch finishing nails, hammer sandpaper, primer paint, paint brush, electric drill and fabric mesh.
1. Measure the dimensions of the flower box based on where you want to put them. Draw the dimensions for every section of the box using a pencil. Make the bottom, back and front of the box at least one inch shorter than the box length and add additional inch when you attach the ends.
2. Cut the wood pieces along the drawn lines and use a hand saw or an electric table for cutting.
3. Put wood glue along the front edge of he wall you will use as the box bottom, place the front section flush against the glue edge in a 90 degree angle. Secure by using finishing nails at each corner, wipe excess glue with a damp cloth and attach the back section in the same manner.
4. Place the wood glue along the front, back and bottom edges of the box pieces you have assembled. Place the side piece on the box end firmly and secure by using finishing nails at each corner. Wipe excess glue using a damp cloth and repeat the process on the other end.
5. Sand away dried glue and excess glue using sandpaper.
6. Drill three small holes on the bottom of the box using an electric drill for drainage.
7. Paint the entire box using a latex primer and let allow to dry thoroughly. Paint the box with a color that matches and coordinates with the house.
8. Place mesh fabric over the holes of the bottom of the box to avoid loss of soil. Fill the box with potting soil, and then add flowers and plants and place in your selected location.
Make sure to choose the right plants or flowers to make your home more appealing. Mixing plants that trail and grow upright is a good start. Use pale colored flowers against a dark brick wall for a dazzling effect and use bright flowers against a pale wall for a dramatic effect to your property. You can plant annual or perennial plants in your boxes. Annual plants include dianthus, geraniums, petunias, lobelia, pansies and sweet alyssum. Permanent plants include dwarf bulbs, ground ivy, miniature roses and English ivy.
